On macOS Sierra 10.12.2 the Visual Studio for Mac Preview fails to install. The install version is 3.0.0. (1).

The software requirements are all installed, but the installer fails to detect the Android SDK at some point:

Mar 21, 2018 Earlier this month, we released version 7.4 of Visual Studio for Mac, our IDE for developers on macOS who are building mobile, web, and cloud apps. Today, we’re announcing the first preview of Visual Studio for Mac version 7.5, which you can get by changing the updater channel in Visual Studio for. Although Microsoft's new Visual Studio for Mac 7.4 preview is mostly a 'fix stuff' release, it does add support for Android Oreo 8.1 along with some productivity boosts for those coding mobile apps with Xamarin. In this release, the fix was in for issues reported by VS developers primarily.

Looking at logs it seems that that the Android SDK and NKD are firstly detected in the default folder, but then something fails.

I have both Xamarin Studio Community Edition installed and Android Studio installed, so all required components should be satisfied.

I had the same problem earlier and fixed it. I'm assuming those that have the issue went to the Visual Studio for Mac web page and clicked the download button which downloads the installer. When this fails you're presented with a list of Android SDK requirements which are the following:

Android SDK Tools
Android SDK Platform-tools
Android SDK Build-tools
Android API 15
Android API 19
Android API 21

Open the SDK Manager and install them. The binary for launching my installation of the SDK Manager is the following: Dvd ripper for mac.

/Users/Matt/Library/Developer/Xamarin/android-sdk-macosx/tools/android

Obviously substitute 'Matt' in the path above for whatever your username is. Once these are installed you need to download the following:

This is the full download and not the 20MB installer you get on the main site. Law firm management software mac. Click the file and install and you should be good to go. Anyhow, that worked for me :-)

I was able to replicate this behavior locally, and have filed Bug 51529 in the Xamarin bug tracking system.

Visual Studio for Mac is something that many Microsoft developers have sought for more than a decade. As Mac OS X became interesting in the early 2000s, coders who spent most of their days working in Visual Studio on Windows wondered why they couldn’t use the same languages, frameworks, and tools for the Mac, rather than needing to learn Objective-C, Cocoa, and Xcode, all of which were substantially different from the languages and tools for Windows development.

Many of us thought the ECMA standards for C# and the .Net Framework, and the Mono project spearheaded by Miguel de Icaza (first at Ximian, then Novell, then Xamarin, and finally at Microsoft), might provide a path to a unified development platform. I for one had no idea it would take so long, although I was aware of at least some of the rather Byzantine politics going on among the various interested parties, through my involvement with the .Net series of books. I was also aware of the reputation that both Mono and Xamarin had for being “a bit crashy.”

The introduction of the lightweight, portable Visual Studio Code, and the gradual integration of Xamarin tools into Visual Studio 2015, were positive signs in my view. Once Microsoft announced it would acquire Xamarin (in February 2016) it became clear to me that the Xamarin Studio and Visual Studio IDEs were likely to merge on the Mac to create a single development environment, but I wasn’t sure exactly what form it would take or how many of the features from Visual Studio for Windows could or would be implemented on the Mac.
